Some Seafood Makers Charging for Ice?

In a recent uproar from the seafood industry, there have been reports of seafood processors who have been including the weight of the ice coating that surrounds frozen fish as part of the over all price for the goods, which are sold by weight. This means consumers have been over paying for their fish and seafood that was sold by these particular processors and has many consumer advocate groups outraged. Even the National Fisheries Institute President, John Connelly, has publicly expressed his own distaste with this business practice after the shocking revelations were shown to him. In the United States, laws exist against this type of marketing, but investigators went under cover to different fish companies around the US and found that in 17 states there were companies leveraging the weight of the ice in their packaging to get more profits from each piece of fish sold to the American public.

Since fresh fish and seafood have recently been tauted as an excellent way to eat a heart healthy food loaded with valuable proteins and omega 3 fatty acids that can help with a wide array of health concerns, consumers had been more open to consuming fish in the US than in previous years. While the ice coating is glazed on to preserve the quality of the fish itself, it is not included in the labeling as part of the price so in accordance with federal laws, consumers would be getting bilked if they are charged for this coating without being told.
